Shortage in traditional transformer supply and long lead times are threatening the AI industry.

Medium voltage transformers are crucial in GPU data centers as they efficiently step down high-voltage power from the grid to usable levels, ensuring stable and reliable energy delivery to high-performance computing equipment. They help manage power distribution effectively, reducing energy losses and enhancing overall efficiency in large-scale AI and machine learning workloads. Additionally, their role in voltage regulation and protection safeguards expensive GPU infrastructure from electrical fluctuations and failures.

The growing demand for medium voltage transformers in GPU data centers has led to a significant shortage, causing long lead times (~ 18 months) that delay infrastructure expansion and limit the scalability of high-performance computing operations.

Solid-state transformers (SSTs) offer a transformative alternative to traditional transformers in data center applications by enhancing efficiency, reliability, and cost-effectiveness. Unlike conventional units, SSTs utilize power electronics to achieve higher energy efficiency by minimizing losses and enabling precise voltage regulation. Their modular design allows for built-in redundancy, reducing the risk of failures and improving overall system reliability. Additionally, SSTs are more compact and lightweight, lowering material costs and simplifying installation. With fewer raw material constraints and a more streamlined manufacturing process, they can also significantly reduce lead times, addressing supply chain challenges associated with traditional medium voltage transformers.
