Former Tesla executive Drew Baglino has launched Heron Power, a new startup focused on developing solid-state transformers to modernize the electric grid. After nearly two decades at Tesla—where he helped design the original Model S powertrain and led battery storage engineering—Baglino left the company in April 2024. Now, Heron Power is reportedly raising $30–$50 million in a Series A round, with Capricorn Investment Group expected to lead the funding.

Solid-state transformers offer major advantages over traditional models, including compact size, improved voltage regulation, and real-time power source switching—features that enhance grid resilience, especially with renewable energy integration. Baglino’s venture enters a space that has seen little innovation in over a century, challenging a market dominated by overseas manufacturing. Heron Power is not alone: Singapore-based Amperesand, also led by former Tesla talent, recently closed a $12.5 million seed round and is now seeking Series A funding as well.
